Diving Deeper!

Below are some highlights from my time at FIU, that showcase my passion for Global Learning!

GL Executive Board

Executive Director

Desiree served as the Executive Director for the Global Learning Student Board during her senior year. Throughout the year, she and her team were able to host various events and engage with global learning students. This experience was exceptional for Desiree, as it allowed her to grow alongside the program. As a student, she began with the Global Medallion program and ended her time at FIU as the Executive Director. This journey marked a significant transformation for her.

Sister Cities International

Africa Region Intern

Sister Cities International is a nonprofit organization founded by President Dwight D. Eisenhower to foster collaboration between cities both internationally and domestically. In her role, Desiree worked towards the 500in5 initiative, a plan developed by the SCI team and solidified by the Biden administration. The goal of this initiative was for SCI to connect 500 African cities in 5 years. During her time at SCI, Desiree contributed to various areas, including databases, roundtables, and marketing. She worked closely with diplomats, ambassadors, and city leaders to help advance the mission of the initiative.

FIU in DC

Talent Lab Assistant

After attending a DC Fly-In on the topic of climate change, Desiree was introduced to the FIU Talent Lab. Through her work as a student assistant, she helped foster collaboration between the MMC (Modesto A. Maidique Campus) and DC, working to integrate prospective students into the DC area. She also assisted in curating and maintaining the internship database, ensuring it was up-to-date so students had access to all the necessary information. Through her role, Desiree played a key part in fostering deeper collaboration in the areas of policy, advocacy, and education.

Published Works

Desiree has also had the privilege of being published twice. Her first article, which was about her trip with FIU to Washington, D.C., discussed the impacts of climate change and emerging technology. Her second piece, published privately, focused on the untold stories of women-led slave revolts, highlighting a crucial part of history often overlooked.
