Capstone Project

Millennium Fellowship

In Fall '25, Desiree completed the Millennium Fellowship cohort, where she focused on a research project titled Academic Freedom and Limitless Education to address the UN's goal of higher education. Her research explores how diminished attention to African and African Diaspora programs affects the social dynamics of Black students. Through interviews and data retrieval, Desiree aimed to gain insight into the challenges of neglecting Black and African studies within the FIU community.

"What I’ve truly learned through my research is the weakness in the representation of marginalized communities, but also the challenges these communities face when it comes to representing themselves. When I began this research, I was placing much of the blame for the lack of growth and strength within the system on external factors. However, I didn’t consider those within the system who have the power to change it—such as the large group of Black students and the executive boards of African and African American student clubs and organizations. My research has forced me to refocus and reconsider many of the ideas I once thought were true.

I now ask others who can understand and reflect on my research to do the same—consider all different perspectives and recognize how this can be integral to their own campuses, especially given the recent election and the changes that politics will bring to the education department. It is crucial that we stay informed. Using our strengths to help others is the best way we can work to reshape our education system."

"Education is the practice of freedom. It is the means by which we become aware of our possibilities." Angela Davis
